My name is Casey Olynyk and before founding Intrigue Learning Services I was General Manager in Canada for one of the world's largest computer training companies.

For most computer professionals, teaching is just one aspect of their work, but for a lucky few like me, it has been a full-time job for the past 7 years. Today, I charge up to $200 an hour just to start talking with a client about any training software curriculum they want to develop.

After working with thousands of students in the classroom setting, I've learned what works best to make computer knowledge stick. And more importantly, what doesn't work. In the traditional classroom setting, I've taught thousands of students (PC "newbies" and experts alike) on how to master dozens of popular software programs.

From desktop operating systems such as Windows XP, 2000, 98 or 95 … to office suites such as Lotus SmartSuite and MS Office … to Web tools like Internet Explorer, Outlook and Eudora ...

From utilities like Yahoo Messenger or ICQ … to anti-virus software like Norton System Works and McAfee … to advanced graphics programs like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Corel Draw.

Name any PC software program and it's highly likely that I've taught someone to use it more effectively at one or more computer-training classrooms across Canada. I loved being a PC instructor. I loved interacting with my students. I loved seeing light bulbs go on in their heads.

You see there's a defining moment in a student's life when a sudden breakthrough occurs that changes their life forever. They learn to easily do what once intimidated them. They have more confidence in themselves. And, they also have more fun acquiring computer knowledge.

But I wasn't satisfied with making a difference in people's lives, 15 students at a time (that's how many people we could comfortably fit into a computer-training classroom). I wanted to make a difference in thousands of students' lives … all at the same time.

Since I knew this was impractical in a traditional classroom setting, I turned to the Internet in 1998 and created what's known today as the "virtual classroom." The rest is history -- because with the growing popularity of the World Wide Web, teaching computer skills in a traditional classroom has quickly become obsolete.

Don't get me wrong, I don't feel that classrooms are totally ineffective. Heck, that's where I made my living for so many years. I've just discovered that the Internet provides a faster, more convenient and more reliable way to teach my students how to master their PC programs.

Two Major Disadvantages Of Traditional Classrooms

    Disadvantage #1: "Traditional Classroom Learning Is Inconvenient"

Back when I was a classroom instructor, I found that my students typically had specific information that they wanted to learn such as "merging" documents in MS Word, or "book marking" in Internet Explorer.

It really disturbed me to have wasted so much of my students' time and money with 7+ hours of detailed lessons on every aspect of a particular PC topic, when all they really wanted was a twenty-minute overview on how to master a specific PC challenge.

I didn't think it made a lot of sense to require someone to pay $120 to learn everything there was to know about Microsoft Word, when all they wanted to learn was how write a personalized letter using "merge" fields. Do you know what I mean?

    Disadvantage #2: "Traditional Classroom Learning Is Ineffective"

The second problem I found with the traditional classroom setting was this: It's designed to cram a bunch of learning into a small amount of time. Any smart teacher knows that forcing students to grasp a topic -- any topic - in one fell swoop is just NOT an effective way to learn.

In fact, studies show that over 90% of what's taught is forgotten within a few days. Not to mention the sheer torture of sitting in a chair all day! That's a lot of wasted time and energy if you ask me. That's probably why so many people hate going to school in the first place.

KEY POINT: "It's not WHAT you learn that makes it boring. It's HOW you learn it."
